Dr. Thurman was named by TIME Magazine as one of the 25 most influential Americans of 1997 describing him as a larger-than-life scholar-activist destined to convey the teachings of Buddhism, from Asia to America. Dr. Thurman has written over 20 books on Tibet, Buddhism, art, and politics, including Inner Revolution: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Real Happiness. He was the first American to be ordained as a Buddhist monk by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1962, and, since, they have become lifelong friends. Jennifer Daubenmier, PhD.
