Generations of Bay Area students and colleagues pay tribute to Danongan "Danny" Kalanduyan by performing selections of pieces learned from him, with added cross-cultural inspiration. Kalanduyan, a consummate master of Southern Filipino music/dance responsible for introducing to the U.S. the traditional kulintang (bronze gong) ensemble music of his Maguindanaon culture, passed away September 28, 2016. A National Endowment Heritage fellow, Kalanduyan taught at SF State, directed and performed with his own Palabuniyan Kulintang Ensemble and organized community with the nonprofit arts collective Mindanao Lilang-Lilang.
