The Afro-Cuban Jazz Ensemble of SF State performs pop hits of the 1960s - 1990s with Latin flair. Music by Luther Vandross, Peabo Bryson and Michael Jackson as well as some Celia Cruz, Tona La Negrato and Kubavana. Founded in 1999, the ensemble's mission is to expose the larger listening audience to the richness of Cuban and other Latin American music styles that have so influenced American popular music styles. Over its 15 year history, the ensemble has performed at San Francisco's Carnaval, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and live on KPFA-FM as well as with legendary performers such as Orquesta Aragon, Israel "Cachao" Lopez and Benny Velarde. Directed by John Calloway.
