HIST 470 [01] - The U.S. Constitution to 1896

Description
Prerequisites: Restricted to upper-division standing; GE Areas A1*, A2*, A3*, B4*, and E* all with grades of C- or better; or permission of the instructor. History of the U.S. Constitution from its origins in the late 1700s to the landmark Plessy v. Ferguson decision in 1896. Special attention to the changing structures of governance, powers of the courts, debates about African American slavery and Native American sovereignty, the struggles of women and minority groups for equal rights and social justice, and the reconstruction of the Constitution after the Civil War.
Class Notes
- This Course utilizes a historical games model, Reacting to the Past, which consists of elaborate games, set in the past, in which students are assigned roles informed by classic texts in the history of ideas.
- * In-Person Classes -- Class meets in-person at scheduled days/times.
Enrollment Requirements
- Must have an upper-division standing and have completed GE Areas 1A/A2, 1B/A3, 1C/A1, and 2/B4, all with grades of C- or better, to enroll in this course.
