SUMMARY:Linguistic Careers in Generative AI -Open House
LOCATION:HUM 485, English Department and Online via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Email - lederer@sfsu.edu\n\nThe world is talking a lot about generative AI and Large Language Models these days, but who teaches the machines how to speak? At the start of the Language Model pipeline, it is Linguists who curate the data or "diet," of the model, ensuring the model understands diverse dialects and social registers. During training, it is Linguists who provide the semantic labels and pragmatic logic that turn word patterns into meaningful conversation. From mitigating toxic bias to fine-tuning human alignment, linguists are the architects of safe and ethical AI. At San Francisco State University, our Linguistics Program in the English Department prepares students for meaningful careers in new tech and the growth areas of generative AI. Discover linguistics at SFSU and learn about our B.A., M.A., minor and computational linguistics certificates at a brief online and in-person open house (with pizza!) on Monday April 13, 3 – 3:30 p.m. in the English Department (Humanities 485) and online through Zoom: https://sfsu.zoom.us/j/6260696046?pwd=N1pzMSt3cW5xUGRsVXZJYzh6eGR6QT09. Passcode: advising. Students from all majors, including CS, welcome! Spread the word.
