Founded in 1999, the Afro-Cuban Jazz Ensemble of SF State performs both traditional and contemporary pieces based on Afro-Cuban religious and folklore music. The ensemble has performed at San Francisco's Carnaval and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and live on KPFA-FM as well as with legendary performers such as Orquesta Aragon, Israel "Cachao" Lopez and Benny Velarde. The ensemble has become a significant part of the Bay Area's multicultural music and art community. Directed by John Calloway.
